The Festival of Fantastic Films 2010

The 21st Annual Convention of the Society of Fantastic Films
will be held on the
15th - 17th October, 2010
at Sachas Hotel, Manchester

Because of the substantial increases in price at the Days Hotel (upwards of 100%) we needed to find a new venue, and while Sachas does not have anything like the cinema-style locations of the Days Hotel, it does have various other pluses:

1) The accommodation cost has been confirmed as £55 per room B & B for single occupancy, £65 per room B & B for double occupancy, £75 per room B & B for triple occupancy.

As Sachas is regularly used by soccer fans it is recommended that you arrange booking very soon if you wish to stay in the hotel – when United or City are at home rooms are at a premium.

When booking you MUST quote code FFSA 1010 to the booking office and the rates will be held.

Special Festival rates are available from Thursday 14th to Monday 18th. The Hotel will release ALL unbooked rooms on the 1st September, and after that will charge the going rate.

Please book soon to avoid disappointment!

2) Bar Prices for the full weekend will be held at Happy Hour rates.

3) The hotel has a lunch carvery at £5 daily and its very good value. Evening meals: Pizzas are available for £10-£12, and we will also be having our usual pub grub at about £6 per evening meal.

4) The films will be shown in the big room and the smaller room upstairs will house Tony Meadows' movies. These will have to be set up as there are no cinema facilities within the hotel – however for those with long memories you’ll remember we did all this back when.

5) I am trying to negotiate a discounted rate for a car park. Sachas do have an agreed discount of 20% with NCP for parking in the ARNDALE CAR PARK (which is security covered and only 400 yards from the hotel)

6) Sachas is on the Metro line from Piccadilly station and is almost next door to the Arndale / Town Centre so the shops etc. are easily accessible.

Tony and I would agree with all the Festival regulars who prefer the Days Hotel / Conference Centre complex, but the prices make it completely impossible. If you're not familiar with Sachas please talk to some of the attendees from the early 90’s and they’ll tell you that Sachas was great fun.

moves is touring through Europe with its first stopovers at Intermodem, Debrecen (Hungary, 5-8 May 2010) and the Dance House, Glasgow (Scotland, 26 May 2010).
Further trips to our partner festivals Frame Research (Portugal) and 700IS (Iceland) are following later this year.

Leeds International Film Festival returns in 2010

The city's brilliant new 850 capacity, extra-friendly bar and music venue willbe the centre of the Film festival in 2009. Situated in close proximity to our major screening venues in Leeds city centre, Nation of Shopkeepers is the prefect venue to unwind, meet friends and discuss the films you've seen that day. We'll also be presenting regular live music and special events at the venue throughout the Film Festival.

The Kinofilm Manchester European Short Film Festival 2010 is pleased to announce a selection of highlights from a line-up that offers an ambitious, accessible and wide ranging week of new film and filmmaking events in Manchester, 27 April – 2 May. As ever, short films are the main focus of the festival, which showcases a kaleidoscope of new talent.

Over six days Kinofilm 2010 will screen 200 shorts over 30 programmes, selected from over 1000 submissions from across Europe. Not to be missed is the hilarious Oscar© nominee: Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty with Kathleen O’Rourke, screening in Animation. At the opposite end of the genre scale, Kino Extreme explores edgy, challenging new work including Tom Geens’ award winner You’re the Stranger Here. Elsewhere, the Love Stories programme explores romance in all its forms, including a wistful break up for the iPod generation in Modern Life is Rubbish, with rising stars Rafe Spall and Rebecca Night. Another Oscar© nominated short, Rabbit a la Berlin (2010 Documentary Short) is a rare treat and we are very excited to announce a special screening of this year’s BAFTA Best Short Film nominees.

Alongside the impressive shorts programmes, there are six debut features to look forward to in the “Transitions” strand, from directors who cut their teeth in short film. David Whitney’s acclaimed Kandahar Break is a definite stand out, the topical, tense drama following a mine clearer in late 1990s Southern Afghanistan. Horror fans will find their adrenalin pumping with local filmmaker Lawrence Gough’s Salvage, in which a sleepy cul-de-sac is plunged into fear when a mysterious ship container washes up nearby. Kinofilm will be welcoming directors featured in the “Transitions” strand to the festival to share their views on making the jump from short to feature.

Latitude Festival returns for an incredible 5th Edition on 15th-18th July 2010 set in the beautiful countryside of Henham Park Estate on Suffolk’s Sunrise Coast. Latitude is dedicated to bringing the very best from the worlds of music, theatre, comedy, literature, film, poetry, dance, art, fashion and cabaret together for one glorious weekend and once again, it has created a line-up like no other.

FILM & MUSIC ARENA

A heady mix of visual and aural pleasure, the Film & Music Arena is home to some of the festival’s most mesmerising performances. Bringing together the worlds of alternative cinema and music, the arena will showcase a jam-packed programme of award-winning films, documentaries and shorts with Q&A sessions and discussions alongside musical treats and thrilling visuals.

BAFTA is will be bringing another excellent programme of Q&As and discussions helping audiences access industry expertise and celebrate quality in film and television. First to be announced is pioneering British film director and screenwriter Paul Greengrass. Famed for his signature use of hand-held cameras, Greengrass is a leading and award-winning filmmaker specialising in dramatisations of real-life events. He has covered topics such as SAS actions in the Gulf War with his TV film The One That Got Away, institutional racism in the police force with The Murder Of Stephen Lawrence and the 1972 shootings in Northern Ireland in his documentary styled Bloody Sunday. Greengrass won the BAFTA award for Best Director at the 60th British Academy Film Awards and received an Oscar nomination for Achievement in Directing at the 79th Academy Awards, as well as earning the Writers Guild of America Award and BAFTA nominations for Best Original Screenplay for his for quasi-documentary-styled film United 93, a film based on the September 11th hijacking of United Airlines Flight 93.

Greengrass has also enjoyed Hollywood success with the 2002 sequel The Bourne Identity and its follow-up The Bourne Ultimatum starring Matt Damon as Jason Bourne, an amnesiac who realises he was once a top CIA assassin who is now being pursued by his former employers. Most recently, Greengrass returned to directing duties with Matt Damon in Green Zone – in which a U.S Army officer discovers covert and faulty intelligence causes him to go rogue as he hunts for Weapons of Mass Destruction in an unstable region.
